A standard used vehicle may still undergo a reconditioning process, but it doesn’t have the seal of approval that comes with the strict standards set forth by Toyota. Toyota Gold Certified Vehicles
Toyota has redefined their certification process which has been around since 1996. Today, the Toyota certified program includes both Gold and Silver certified vehicles which are defined by certain age and mileage restrictions and other criteria. Let’s first discuss the Toyota Gold Certified Vehicles. These are vehicles that are under six years of age and have fewer than 85,000 miles. Gold Certified Vehicles must also undergo a strict 160-point vehicle inspection that covers everything from the condition of the interior to what is under the hood.
If a vehicle is assigned the Gold Certification, the purchase will include a warranty package to cover any unexpected repairs to your vehicle. A Gold Certified vehicle will get a 12-month/ 12,000 mile limited comprehensive warranty and a 7-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty. You’ll also get 24-hour roadside assistance for the first 7-years or 100k miles, whichever comes first.
Toyota Silver Certified Vehicles
The second tier of Toyota certified vehicles is the Silver Certification. This certification applies to vehicles that exceed the age and mileage limits of the Gold program, but fall within the bounds of the Silver guidelines. A Silver Certified Toyota can be up to 10 years old and have between 60,000 and 125,000 miles. The vehicle will undergo a stringent 136 point inspection that covers the most critical components of the vehicle. As you can see, the criteria for a Silver Certification is less stringent than the Gold but still offers peace of mind to the buyer.
The warranty package on the Silver certified vehicle differs from that of the Gold certified vehicle. The vehicle will come with a 12-month/12,000 mile limited powertrain warranty and does not include a comprehensive warranty like the Gold certified vehicle. However, you will get 24-hour roadside assistance for 12 months or 12,000 miles from the date of your purchase. Both of these warranty packages are transferable to the next owner at no additional cost, which will help your resale value.
